Not an isolated event, it involves soft and hard skills, a mature approach and the ability to manage and coordinate complicated situations. Understanding the humanness of every situation is a skill you can’t necessarily learn. 

Independent support is criticial in avoiding "conflict of interest" situations, especially important when maintenance organisations are responsible for contracted aircraft maintenance (Part 145) and continuing airworthiness (CAMO) at the same time. The same can also be said for operators who undertake their own maintenance and continuing airworthiness activities.
